Introduction and Overview
This is Red Magics new Nova gaming fan a gaming focused Android tablet from the brand thats given us a bunch of excellent gaming phones over the years. And here theyve packed a lot into this one. (Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
Theyve got heat pipes a highspeed fan an overclocked flagship HN3 when even Samsungs gone Mediatek this year.
And then theres a beautiful high resolution display with a high refresh rate theres even RGB.
Guys theres a lot to talk about here. My names mari youre in thetechcafe and lets start with getting this tablet unboxed.
Unboxing and Storage Options
Now I picked up the 12256 which is the base variant and do note that you cannot use a microSD card here and its sad to see microSD support on more and more tablets being cut off these days. (Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
Anyways once you open up the box youre greeted by the Red Magic gaming pad itself with that transparent area at the top well get to that in a moment.
We then have a leaflet alongside some Red Magic stickers then theres a red USB type C to type C cable and finally a 120W charger.
Charging and Battery Performance
Do note that in some markets Red Magic only includes an 80W charger.
Its got a 10 to 100mAh battery and with the included 120W charger you can get it to about 50% in just 15 minutes. (Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
A full charge takes about 45 which is excellent.
Display Specifications
The display is an almost 11inch 16×10 panel with a 2.8K resolution meaning the pixel density is 312 pixels per inch which is much sharper than what you see on other tablets with the display this size.
The 144Hz refresh is also pretty cool the touch sampling rate is 840Hz so these two should definitely be interesting for gamers. (Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
The brightness talks out at a little over 500 nits which is not great even by LCD standards but it should be fine for usage indoors.
Durability and Cooling System Design
Red Magic has not talked about the glass they used for protection or an IP rating but for what its worth Cherry League Everythings videos show that they have rubber grommets everywhere so an accidental splash might not necessarily spell doom for this.
But wait didnt you say it has a farm Now if thats your question good. (Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
Unlike on Red Magic phones there is no vent here for intake and exhaust theyve instead used the fact that the body here is a lot larger than a phone to have the fan circulate air on the inside and spread the heat evenly to help with dissipation.
Cooling Performance Results
Now the results were kind of great let me explain. (Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
If you see the stability scores here with the fan off theyre very high meaning theres already very little throttling going on. (Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
This seems to be because of the large heat pipes that Red Magics put in the excellent cooling system.
Fan Performance Analysis
Now these are the numbers that we got with the fan on so it doesnt seem like turning the fan on or off affects the stability all that much does it But what it does do is spread the heat out more meaning when youre playing for longer than 30 minutes or so it should help retain the performance.(Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
Memory and Storage Specifications
Now we get 12 16 or a whopping 24 gigs of LPDDR5X RAM here to go along with 256 512 gigs or a terabyte of fast UFS 4.0 storage.
Once again hate the fact that the storage is unexpandable via microSD.
Processor Performance and Gaming Experience
But anyways the 8 Gen 3 here this is what they call the leading version meaning the powerful core is clocked at 3.4 GHz and the GPUs also been overclocked its running at 1000MHz.
Now no matter what game you run the Nova seems to have no issues smooth maxed out gameplay regardless of the game thats what youre going to be seeing.
And by the way you can play powered by the wall adapter meaning the battery wont be charged so that theres no heat generation.(Red Magic Nova Gaming Tablet)
Gaming Capabilities and Emulation
Another nifty little trick from Red Magic to sustain performance. So this is the best gaming experience youre going to have on a tablet.
See how I said tablet or not Android tablet because if you think about it iOS these days has triple A games but then Android has WinLator.
Meaning games like Resident Evil Village are playable on the Nova too.
I havent personally gotten into Windows emulation yet but it does seem to be doable.
At the emulation this switch which I cannot show thank you Nintendo the Wii PS2 everythings perfectly playable upscaled with the awesome 4 speakers theyve included the experience its really good.
Controller Recommendation
Now for those curious the controller weve used here is the Anbernic P01 sponsor for the video and this controller is very interesting. Its feature packed but costs only $15. Now for that price what you get are Hall sensor analog sticks Hall sensor analog triggers a very ergonomic build it works with Android iOS Windows and even the Switch.
Physical Design and Build Quality
Now coming back lets talk about the ergonomics on the Red Magic Nova.
Compared to other 11inch tablets this is a little heavier. Now thats because of the much higher capacity battery and all the cooling stuff that Red Magics added.
Its also slightly thicker but I dont think we can really complain about 7.3mm of thickness right Now the metal finish to the back it doesnt really pick up fingerprints but it does pick up smudges quite easily which I found a little annoying.
Now that said the Nova overall its pretty comfortable to hold in use.
And I like the way its built. Metal all around that little piece of glass up top RGB nice.
Camera Performance
Now while were here the camera theres a single sensor 50MP its really nothing to write home about.
Its good for the occasional document scan for example and thats pretty much it.
To the front we have a centered and landscaped 20MP shooter thats serviceable should be fine for video conferences and so on.
Software and Connectivity Features
From a software perspective we get Android 14 with Red Magic OS on top.
And given these specs its no surprise that everything runs smooth. The USB port here is 3.1 type C with video out so you can mirror the screen and it also allows you to switch the tablet into a trackpad and get rid of letterboxes use the full monitor that youre connected to thats always nice.
Limitations and Final Verdict
Now is this tablet perfect Of course not Ive been talking about the lack of microSD all throughout this blog and it doesnt have GPS even if you want to pay extra it doesnt have a But overall even without taking price into account the sheer performance on offer it makes the Red Magic Nova gaming pad a very good option.
But once you take the asking price of $4.99 or euros into account this looks like arguably one of the best tablets in the market today.
So what do you think about the Red Magic Nova Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for supporting mari out.
